Alfresco Elegance: The Art of the Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

The Rise of UK Outdoor Weddings: A Trend Worth Celebrating

In recent years, the trend of outdoor weddings in the UK has skyrocketed, and it's not hard to see why. While the weather may be a bit unpredictable, the stunning designs and endless possibilities that outdoor ceremonies offer are enough to make any couple dream of saying “I do” under the open sky. Personally, I believe that a summer wedding isn’t truly complete without an outdoor ceremony.

Picture this: a floral-lined aisle, paper umbrellas to shield your guests from the sun, and beautiful urns that perfectly complement the natural beauty surrounding you. It’s the kind of setting that not only creates breathtaking photos but also makes your day feel extra special and unique.

So, if you're dreaming of saying “I do” under blue skies and natural light, here are a few key design tips we highly recommend to help you make the most of your al fresco celebration:

1. Create a Defined Walkway

This summer, we saw a variety of aisle designs — some with a traditional runner, others embracing a more organic approach with no defined path at all. While both styles can be beautiful, there’s something undeniably special about a purposeful, well-designed walkway.

A runner or bespoke flooring not only gives the ceremony structure, but it also creates a clear, intentional route for the bridal party. It visually anchors the space and adds that final polished touch to the ceremony design.

That said, minimalist setups without a runner can still be incredibly striking — especially when paired with statement chairs and floral arrangements that subtly frame the aisle. This approach feels modern, fresh, and effortless, particularly when done with symmetry and style.

Whether you choose a lush runner or a more natural aisle, the key is to ensure the entrance feels considered and elevated — it's the moment everyone turns to watch, after all.

2. Line the Aisle with Florals

Florals are non-negotiable for us when it comes to elevating an outdoor ceremony. Lining the aisle with flowers adds beauty, depth, and an immediate injection of your colour palette.

Think:

  • Wildflower meadows spilling onto the path

  • Potted arrangements or rattan buckets filled with blooms

  • Romantic florals nestled in vintage containers

Just remember to leave enough room for the wedding party to walk comfortably down the aisle — balance is everything, in addition to this work with your florist on how to move these florals after your ceremony and re-use for the main dining space (including the walkway, entrance and bar).

3. Frame the Top of the Aisle

The focal point of your ceremony should be where you and your partner stand — and framing this space is a key design decision.

Some ideas we love:

  • Statement plinths or urns filled with overflowing blooms for dramatic impact

  • A semi-circle of meadow-style florals to gently wrap around the couple

  • An arched floral structure or asymmetric design to frame your vows beautifully

  • Beautifully tall draped backdrops are also huge at the moment, a romantic material such as satin or velvet is so stunning for end of aisle moment

Whatever you choose, we say: go big. The top of the aisle is not the place to hold back — this is the moment everyone’s watching, and it should feel magical.

4. Plan for Sun or Showers

It may seem obvious, but outdoor ceremonies need a solid wet weather plan — this should be non-negotiable.

Whether it’s:

  • An indoor ceremony backup within your venue

  • A designated space inside your marquee

  • A separate covered area nearby

Think ahead. If your marquee is doubling as your reception space, how will a ceremony setup affect your furniture layout and turnaround time?

Bonus tip: Offer umbrellas (for rain or shine!) and handheld fans on every chair. Not only are they practical, but they’re also a great place to include personalised touches for your guests.
